Elmer A. Eddy of Stratton Dies
Formerly Carried on Extensive Lumbering Operations
Twice Representative in Legislature
Elmer Albert Eddy, 81, one of Stratton's most prominent citizens, formerly town clerk and selectman of that town for 27 and 40 years, respectively, died yesterday at 2:15 at the Western avenue home of his daughter, Miss Ethel A. Eddy. Mr. Eddy had been in ill health several years and five weeks ago suffered a slight cerebral hemorrhage.
Born in Athol, Mass., on March 4, 1855, he was the oldest of five children of Albert and Chloe Ann (Rice) Eddy. Moving with his family to Stratton when a small boy he spent the rest of his life there with the exception of two years as a young man in Minnesota. Mr. Eddy married on June 6 1881, Miss Inez Pike of Stratton. Following Mrs. Eddy's death in 1928 Mr. Eddy came to Brattleboro to make his home with his daughter.
During his active years Mr. Eddy had extensive lumber operations. He also was a well-known and successful farmer. He had retained his ownership of considerable land in Stratton. Mr. Eddy was twice representative from his town in the state legislature. He belonged to no fraternal organizations.
Mr. Eddy leaves his daughter, Miss Ethel A. Eddy, district school supervisor; two brothers, Emery J. Eddy and Bert H. Eddy, both of this town and three grandchildren, Mrs. Doris E. Johnson of Stratton and Brattleboro, Miss Marjorie A. Eddy of New York city and Elmer H. Eddy of Stratton. He also leaves four great-grandchildren, Barbara , Stuart, Betty and Hermon Johnson Mr. Eddy?s only son Hermon E. Eddy, a Brattleboro attorney, died in February 1917. a daughter, Mabel, died in infancy. Mr. Eddy's sister, Lura wife of Charles Benson of this town, died in 1930, and a brother, Alner P., died here in 1923.
Funeral services will be held at the farm home in Stratton Sunday at 3 p.m. (E. S. T.), Rev. V. G. Higgs, pastor of the First Baptist church of this town officiating. The burial will take place in the family cemetery, Pike Hollow, Stratton.
Mr. Eddy possessed a fine sense of honesty and integrity which matched well the rugged constitution he displayed in his more active business career. Reliable, cheerful and friendly, he was an honor to his community, and his memory will be cherished by numerous friends and relatives.
Elmer married Pike, Inez Theodosia on 5 Jun 1880 in Somerset, Vermont. Inez (daughter of Pike, Moses and Grout, Dorcas) was born on 12 Sep 1855 in Stratton, Vermont; died on 1 Nov 1928 in USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
