Early History of Haldimand and District Gives Interesting Details

COBOURG. - Reuben Bedell opened a store at or near Slay Bay in 1797. Very early in the 19 century, Sheriff Ruttan opened a store at Grafton. This building is still standing on the property owned by Mrs. Thos. Heenan, and is used as a driving shed. At the time of the war of 1812-15 this was the only store in the Township of Haldimand. It was a departmental store on a small scale. Sheriff Ruttan kept a small stock of dry goods. It is said that he used to exchange a yard of calico for a bushel of wheat. He also carried a stock of rum, as was the custom, which he retailed at one dollar a quart. Upon a hill about a mile east of Benlock, in Haldimand Township, the late Baige M. Eddy in the year 1810 built a frame barn. It is said that he went to Kingston on horseback to get the nails, paid a quarter of a pound, put half in each end of a bag, put them across his horse and returned in four days, averaging forty five miles per day. Grafton was first called Haldimand Post Office, and there was quite a settlement in the vicinity of that place, before there were many homes erected where the town of Cobourg now stands.

An Aged Couple Burned to Death last Sunday Morning.

Mr. and Mrs. William Purdy last Saturday night retired in usual health
with an apparently fair prospect of months and perhaps years being yet
added to their allotted time, though they were both past the "three
score years and ten." How little this aged couple realized last
Saturday evening, as they sat smoking their pipes and pleasantly
chatting with a neighbor, about half past eight, that this was their
last night on earth! That when the morning light should welcome in
the near Sabbath, that they would both be done with all life's wearying
cares and trials, and they entered into the new life,---and now the
end had come. Fifty seven years they had borne life's burdens together,
and now they were together to lay them down, and, leaning upon each
other, hand in hand as it were, walk out into the great mystery.

Sunday morning, about four o'clock, the little house near the south
bridge in this city, where this couple lived alone, was discovered in
flames. Those first reaching the house burst in the door, but too
late---as the whole inside of the dwelling was a mass of flame, and in
a moment the floors and roof had fallen into the cellar. At first no
one seemed to think but that the old people were safely outside. But
it was not long before the dreadful truth that they were buried in the
burning ruins, settled upon all, and the firemen took immediate action
to recover the bodies. They were found side by side in the exact locality
of their bed, so the conclusion was soon reached that they were suffocated,
and had made no effort to escape. The bodies were drawn from the ruins,
a disfigured and sickening sight.

Coroner Hollister was immediately notified, a jury subpoenaed, and a
verdict rendered at 2 o'clock Sunday that the death of the aged people
was caused by suffocation.

Mr. and Mrs. Purdy were born in Canada, were aged seventy-eight and
seventy-nine years, the wife being one year the younger. They had ten
children, three living in Minnesota---two daughters, Mrs. John Eddy
and Mrs. Lafayette Pierce, living about three miles this side of Lyle,
and a daughter residing in Austin, Mrs. Alfred Church. Mrs. Thomas Varco,
of the Varco station, was a sister of Mrs. Purdy. The remains were tak
to Varco and buried last Sunday afternoon, where a brother of Mrs. Purdy
is also buried. The funeral services will take place at Enterprise scho
house, next Sunday at 2 o'clock PM, Rev. J.W. Eldridge, of this city,
officiating.

is believed to be the daughter of Bayes Manchester Eddy (1771-1849)
and Asenieth Honeywell (1785-1876) and directly descends from William Eddy
(1558-1616), Vicar of Cranbrook.]

OBITUARY
Again the Press is called upon to chronicle the death of one of our most respected and dearly beloved citizens who peacefully passed to her reward at 12:30 on Monday, February 27, 1922, at the advanced age of 85 years, 3 months and 17 days, after an illness of several weeks. Mary Purdy was born at Halderman, District of New Brunswick, Canada. When thirteen years of age she moved with her parents to Wisconsin, and on May 11th , 1862 was united in marriage to Alfred A. Church at Oskaloosa, Iowa. The husband and father died in 1896, and was buried in Woodbury cemetery, near Austin, MN. In 1900, Mrs. Church moved to Steele, settling on a homestead northwest of town, but has stayed in town for several years past. She united with the First Presbyterian church of Steele in 1901 and has always been interested in the work of the church. She was as quiet woman enjoying her quiet home life with her son, Orville, who tenderly cared for her until the end came. She was of cheerful disposition, always looking on the bright side of life. She bore her affliction with patience and Christian resignation and was ready when the summons came, passing away peacefully fortified by the last rites of the church she loved. She died as she lived, a devoted Christian, neighbor, citizen and true friend. At the church on Friday, March 3 where the last sad rites were conducted, a large representative of friends gathered. The funeral of this dear old lady was a matter of concern felt by all and those who possibly could attend were present to pay a last tribute of their respect and love to their departed friend. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Daniel K Ford, and the hymns "Crossing the Bar" and "Feel the Touch of His Hand on Mine" were beautifully rendered by FB Lodge and JA Prescott. Interment was made in the Woodlawn cemetery, where the body was laid beside that of her sister , Mrs. B.C. Smith (Asenieth).
The six children left to mourn the loss of a good and true mother are James, Lawrence, William, Orville, Edwin and Mrs Minnie Dartt. The Press joins in extending sympathy to those who survive her.
