851 | James Garfield Eddy (1881 - 1964) Submitted by Charlotte Lamp, Seattle, WA (May 2003) Bay City born, he went on to become a pioneer in forestry genetics. James Garfield Eddy James Garfield Eddy, Sr., lumberman, investor and forest geneticist was born in Bay City, Michigan, on April 7, 1881. He was the son of John Franklin and Charlotte Whittemore Eddy. John Eddy was a lumberman who had come to Michigan from Bangor Maine in 1860 to establish a large sawmill. The Eddy family had been associated with the lumber business for several generations. James completed his early schooling at Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 1899 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University in 1903. That same year, he and his brother John W. acquired an interest in the Port Blakely Mill Company on Bainbridge Island in the state of Washington. James sold lumber from the mill in San Francisco until the mill burned. He next relocated to Everett, Washington, where he learned more about the lumber business before buying his own mill, the Ferry Baker Lumber Company. James was also active in the management of the Eddy Investment Company of Bay City, Michigan with his brothers John W. and Robert B. The company had been founded by their father and was managed by the three brothers following the father's passing in 1907. After Robert's death, the Eddy Investment Company was moved to Seattle in 1934. James married Mary Horton Cooley of Bay City on April 28, 1904. They became the parents of three daughters and one son: Adaline Seymour, Charlotte Whittemore , Mary Ann Cooley, and James Garfield, Jr. James had many business interests besides his lumber company. He raised citrus fruit in California and apples in Washington. During World War I, he joined D.E. Skinner and his brother, John W., in establishing the Skinner and Eddy Shipbuilding Company in Seattle. However, it was the lumber business and the growing of trees that held his greatest interest. James could look back to his father's and grandfather's careers and trace in just three generations the migration of the forest industry from New England to the Lake States to the Pacific Northwest. He knew that the logged-over lands must be reforested to meet the future needs for wood. He became convinced that there must be a way to grow the new trees faster than nature would grow them. James had read everything published about the work of Luther Burbank and his plant-breeding experiments in California. In 1918 James wrote the scientist but found Burbank not interested in trees for timber, only fruit trees, flowers and vines. James traveled to Burbank's home in Santa Rosa, California, where he requested a personal meeting with Burbank. Mrs. Burbank refused to let her ailing husband be bothered, but Eddy persisted for two weeks until the interview was granted. Burbank showed Eddy his hybrid walnut tree that had grown to a diameter of 24 inches at 16 years of age. While Burbank doubted his principles could be applied to conifers, he helped Eddy meet others interested in improving tree growth. Encouraged by the support of scientists from the University of California and the U.S. Forest Service, and eventually the backing of Burbank, Eddy was ready to move forward with his project. Eddy was convinced that the federal government would offer financial support for tree improvement. In 1923 he appeared before the Select Committee on Forestry of the United States Senate to plead his case. His testimony created much interest, but no federal funds were offered to support the project. In 1925 Eddy believed that he could wait no longer. Using his own funds, he established the Eddy Tree Breeding Station at Placerville, California. For eleven years the station was maintained with Eddy's personal funds, with assistance from the Carnegie Institute. Eddy offered Burbank the job of directing the project, but he declined because of his age and current studies. Eddie did accept Burbank's recommendation of a University of California teacher and researcher, Lloyd Austin, to lead the project. Because of the great commercial value and wide growing range, pine was chosen as the major species to study. An arboretum later named the Eddy Arboretum was first established with over 90 species and varieties of pine. By 1931, this was the most complete arboretum of pine in the world. The first few years were spent learning how to select quality parent trees. The next phase was undergoing hybridization between various species of pines. This long, complex undertaking has produced over 66 different hybrid combinations of pine, each with different characteristics of greater root systems, more abundant foliage, faster diameter growth and other responses. The research also led to the rearrangement of the pinus genus by studying the chromosomes of many species. As the Eddy Tree Breeding Station developed a reputation and increased staff, Eddy continued to support its work. However, he agreed with others that the research might best be affiliated either with a university or some other organization. In 1932, the name was officially changed to the Institute of Forest Genetics with a board of trustees responsible for its administration. Three years later, in 1935, Congress authorized the federal government to accept the institute as a gift to be administered by the U.S. Forest Service. Research work continues today at the Institute of Forest Genetics. Over the years, Eddy invested countless hours of planning and support, plus over $250,000 of his own funds to make the institute possible. In 1952, The American Forestry Association presented Eddy with its highest award for outstanding service to American forestry, in recognition of his more than 25 years of effective efforts in the field of forest genetics. Eddy died on June 5, 1964. Two months later, the Native Sons of the Golden West dedicated a plaque at the institute that reads in part: "Businessman, scientist, conservator, and true pioneer; his foresight and generous effort advanced the science of forest genetics many years and helped to conserve the supply of forest products for the future." (Charlotte Lamp is the grand-daughter of James Garfield and Mary Horton (Cooley) Eddy.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Eddy, James Garfield (I00956)

861 | Jeffrey Alan Eddy January 20, 1958 - May 26, 2004 Indianapolis, Indiana Date of visitation: June 1, 2004 Time of visitation: 4:00 PM Date of service: June 2, 2004 Time of service: 10:00 AM Funeral home: Leppert Life Story Funeral Home - Nora Chapel Obituary: Jeffrey Alan Eddy was optimistic and fun loving, with an enthusiasm for life. He cared about people and was understanding and compassionate. He helped others in whatever way he could. He appreciated the beauty and peace found in nature and enjoyed outdoor recreation. His greatest joy was found in his family. He was a supportive husband and father, and was completely content with what he had been given. Eugene and Judith (Moock) Eddy had barely said "I do" when they found out that their newly established family was about to grow. On January 20, 1958, only nine months and two weeks after they were married, their first son, Jeffrey, was born. He was not an only child for long, since his twin sister Linda was only seven minutes behind. Seven minutes was enough for Jeff, and when they were older he made it a point to remind her that he was the oldest. The twins always got a lot of attention when they were in public. Jeff and Linda were very close, described as "two peas in a pod," and shared many adventures together as youngsters. On one occasion, the duo visited the neighbor's garden and decided it would be fun to pick every single tomato and throw them over the hill. Linda later apologized, but Jeff was too shy. The neighbor was gracious and not upset with them at all. They shared many common tastes, as well. In fact, one day the two of them went to the basement and opened a very large bag of dog food, spreading it all over the basement floor. They figured if it was good enough for the dog, it was good enough for them. They both sat down and started snacking on it. They also had a common fascination with teeth after seeing the neighbor lady remove her upper denture. Try as they might, neither one of them could understand why their teeth wouldn't come out. The Eddy family lived in Canton, Ohio, until the twins were five years old. Then they moved to Dayton, where they stayed for eight years, and then to Indianapolis. Jeff attended J. M. Holt Elementary School, Kettering Junior High and Craig Junior High, and then Lawrence Central High School, where he graduated. He was an excellent student and an outstanding swimmer. An entire wall in his bedroom was covered with his swimming ribbons. His activities and his sense of responsibility kept him busy and he was never in any trouble. He was also active in the Boy Scouts and was very proud of his accomplishment of walking the Appalachian Trail. The Eddys were a close-knit family. Every year starting in the 1970s they would take vacations to Disney World. Jeff became so familiar with the park that his parents let him go to the attractions on his own. Jeff was very active and grew up participating in athletics with his father. They played tennis together and spent a lot of time sailing, an experience that Jeff treasued throughout his life. Jeff attended Indiana University and during the summer worked as a lifeguard at Hillcrest Country Club. His blonde hair, whitened by the sun, his stunning tan, and his thoughtfulness got the attention of a young lady named Marlene. Marlene, a student at Butler University, caught Jeff's eye, as well. They didn't see much of each other during their freshman year, but Marlene decided to transfer to IU for her sophomore year. The couple fell in love. Jeff proposed to Marlene in a small apartment in Bloomington. Marlene was sitting at the tiny kitchen table, admiring the single rose centerpiece. During the intimate dinner, Jeff looked Marlene in the eyes and said, "Will you marry me?" Thrilled, Marlene answered, "Yes, of course!" Jeff graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Marketing. He and Marlene were married on January 3, 1981, in Indianapolis. Jeff's nephew Dan was the ring bearer at the wedding. Like most two year olds will in that situation, he stole the show. As he was walking up the aisle, Dan looked over and saw his grandmother. Overcome with joy at seeing her, he shouted, "Nana!" Jeff and Marlene's first home was that same small apartment where they had gotten engaged. Jeff's family lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, for many years where he sold homes for residential home builders. They moved to Denver, Colorado, four years ago, doing the same job but with the added benefit of the beautiful surroundings of the Mile High City. His career goal was to be a successful entrepreneur, following the example of his grandfather whom he admired so much. He was not as concerned about the specifics of his employment as he was about the positive, forward direction that he wanted to go. Always, though, Jeff's family came first. The birth of their first child, Michael, brought new joy into their lives. Jeff was the first to hold their first born baby boy when he came into the world. He was a wonderful father. Later, Brian and Jon added to the joy in their household, and Jeff wholeheartedly took on his responsibility of training them to be men of integrity. All three sons remember their father's three rules: don't lie, don't cheat, and don't steal. He wanted them to be happy, to be good men, and to know that they were loved. Jeff is survived by his wife, Marlene Eddy; three sons, Michael, Brian, and Jonathan; his parents; his twin sister, Linda K. Till; a brother, Thomas A. Eddy; two aunts, Joan Moock and Sandra Brown; an uncle, Edward Eddy; and many cousins. Jeff passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2004. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steven A. Eddy. Jeff was just forty-six. Friends will be received on Tuesday, June 1, from 4 - 8 PM at the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, at 10:00 AM in the Second Presbyterian Church Chapel. Interment will be in Union Chapel Cemetery. To read Jeff's complete life story, share a memory, send flowers, or make a memorial contribution to either the Second Presbyterian Church or the American Heart Association, please visit his personal web page at www.lifestorynet.com. Jeff has given his loved ones precious memories of his laughter, his life, and his love. They will always have his example of what it means to be a son, a brother, a husband, a father- a man. May you grow up to be righteous, May you grow up to be true, May you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding you May you always be courageous, Stand upright and be strong, May you stay Forever young - Forever Young, Bob Dylan MEMORIES | Eddy, Jeffery Allen (I83517)

Eddy Biography This biography appears on pages 516, 519 in "History of Minnehaha County, South Dakota" by Dana R. Bailey EDDY, JONATHAN G., was born in Jamaica, Windham county, Vermont, August 27, 1844; he was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools and at the Leland & Gray seminary, in Townshend, Vermont. In 1865 he entered the law office of Hoyt H. Wheeler, of Jamaica (now U. S. district judge of the district of Vermont), where he remained until April, 1869, at which time he was admitted to the bar. He then practiced law in Jamaica for six years. In 1875 removed to Brattleboro and formed a copartnership with Charles N. Davenport under the firm name of Davenport & Eddy. It was one of the strong, successful law firms of the state of Vermont. This copartnership continued until January, 1882, when, owing to poor health, Mr. Davenport was compelled to retire from active work. Mr. Eddy then formed a copartnership with James L. Martin, of Brattleboro, which continued four years. In July, 1886, he came to Sioux Falls and formed a copartnership with H. J. Davenport, a son of his former partner. This firm commenced the practice of law, but soon drifted into the real estate business. Real estate was at that time booming, and they made some large deals and built the Temple Court on Main avenue, but the hard times which followed left them with the consolation only that they had been with the crowd and had shown great faith in the future of their adopted city. While a resident of Jamaica, Mr. Eddy was elected representative to the legislature and served one term. He was highly esteemed by the legal profession, and had the reputation of being a thoroughly good lawyer. He is now practicing law in Sioux Falls, and has many friends who hope that when prosperous times return he may reap bountiful harvest, such as will to some extent repay him for his labor and outlay in advancing the material interests of Sioux Falls. | Eddy, Jonathan Green (I00038)
