2024 | [EFA4.FTW] Obituaries: Friday, July 13, 2001 Garrett Eddy was conservationist, timberman By David Olson Conservationists and timber executives are often bitter enemies, but Garrett Eddy was a rare combination of both. The former president and chairman of Port Blakely Tree Farms in Seattle was a pioneer in tree research and in making logging more environmentally sensitive. Mr. Eddy died July Fourth in Seattle after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 85. "Garrett Eddy believed we could have our cake and eat it, too, in terms of being able to have a viable forest industry while at the same time maintaining and conserving biodiversity," said Neal Wilkins, a wildlife biologist with the company until 1998. Jay Hair, former president of the National Wildlife Federation and the World Conservation Union, was so impressed by Port Blakely's policies that he joined the company's board in January. "They have been as environmentally responsible and friendly a company as any in North America," Hair said. "Garrett Eddy's greatest legacy is the values of conservation and sustainable development that the company continues to reflect. He was an environmentalist before we knew what the word environmentalist meant." Mr. Eddy was born June 8, 1916, in Seattle, the son of early Seattle residents John Whittemore and Ethel Garrett Eddy. The Eddy family bought Port Blakely Mill, founded in 1864, in 1903. Today, Port Blakely Tree Farms is a forestry and real-estate-development company. During the 1940s and 1950s, Mr. Eddy was one of the pioneers in research in thinning tree stands, or cutting down smaller trees so larger ones could grow bigger, said Jim Warjone, chairman and chief executive officer of the company. Port Blakely also broke with standard timber-industry practices by instituting long rotation patterns, Hair said. For example, Douglas firs were allowed to grow for as long as 80 years instead of the standard 40 years. That meant both higher-quality wood and a better habitat for wildlife, especially birds. Birds were Mr. Eddy's great love. His contributions in the 1980s and '90s of more than $2 million to the University of Washington's Burke Museum transformed its bird-research center into one of the most prestigious in the world, said Sievert Rohwer, curator of birds at the museum and professor of zoology at the University of Washington. Mr. Eddy funded 20 to 30 ornithology-research trips to Russia in the 1990s, he said, and participated in two of them, collecting bird samples, drying out specimens and setting up camp. Mr. Eddy served as president of Port Blakely from 1952 until 1980 and as chairman of its board from 1981 to 1996. He continued going to his Seattle office two or three days a week until early this year, when he became too sick to do so, Warjone said. At his office, he continued to do research and dispense advice to people such as Court Stanley, chief forester for Port Blakely. "I could come to him with an idea, and he always had either already done that, considered that and not done it, or had some important insight into it," Stanley said. Mr. Eddy is survived by a son, John W. Eddy II; a daughter, Barbara Ethel Eddy; and two grandsons. His wife, Mary Ford Eddy, died in 1990, and another son, Garrett Edward Eddy, was killed in combat in Cambodia in 197 Services were held Monday at Epiphany Parish of Seattle. | Eddy, Garrett (I01409)

2025 | [EFA4.FTW] Obituaries: Monday, May 24, 1999 New York Times Alice LeCornu made sure things were done by the book by Roberto Sanchez Seattle Times staff reporter In the last years of her life, Alice LeCornu lived "with grace," according to a friend - and "within the rules." That would be Robert's Rules of Order. As parliamentarian of the resident association at Seattle's Exeter House, Mrs. LeCornu never started a meeting without her handy copy, making sure everything was done properly, according to the book. "She would have never been caught without it," said Shirley Daniel, a resident at Exeter who was also Mrs. LeCornu's long-time travel agent. Mrs. LeCornu died of respiratory complications on May 15, at the age of 100. A memorial celebration in her honor will be 1 p.m. June 12 at the Queen Anne United Methodist Church, 1606 5th Ave. W. in Seattle. She celebrated her last birthday on Sept. 30, with cake, friends and even a congratulatory letter from President Clinton. She was the oldest resident at Exeter, where she spent the last 31 years of her life. Mrs. LeCornu was born in 1898 in Brigham City, UT, the daughter of Wynn Eddy, a pharmacist who also served in the state legislature. She attended the University of UT for a year, then transferred to Stanford University when it dropped its limits on the enrollment of women, graduating with honors. Mrs. LeCornu earned a master's degree in English literature from Washington State University, where she met her husband, Paul LeCornu. He was a director of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era job program that hired primarily young unmarried men for work on national parks and other wildlife areas. After her husband's death, Mrs. LeCornu devoted her time to travel and to her church, Queen Anne United Methodist. She was a Parish Visitor, Bible teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. She sailed the world twice, traveled to Africa and made pilgrimages to the Holy Land. She was very active in politics, serving as an election officer. Relatives said she never missed a chance to vote. She also was an active member of the Women's University Club and the Queen Anne Eastern Star. Mrs. LeCornu also wrote poetry through much of her life, and in 1990 had a collection published, titled "Yesterday's Singing." She was also an avid collector of stuffed toy animals, especially monkeys. Her room was packed full of them, along with loads of books. Willard Sweany, a cousin who also managed her affairs later in life, said Mrs. LeCornu was a very sociable, cheery person who loved parties, music, chocolates and her church. "She was a party girl," Sweany said. "For her birthday on Sept. 20, the staff got her all gussied up and had a big party for her. She was really alive for that. She really enjoyed it." Survivors include Sweany and two other cousins, Loris Croff of Tacoma and Harley Sweany of Benton City, Benton County. | Eddy, Alice Leland (I01143)

2028 | [EFA4.FTW] Obituary of Samuel Lewis Mantz Theodore Mantz, Des Moines Attorney, received word Thursday of the death of his father, S. L. Mantz, 83, at Audobon, Iowa. Eight children survive, among whom is the District Judge, H. J. Mantz, of Audobon. Funeral services have not been arranged. Samuel Lewis Mantz, son of Jonas and Abbie Ruch Mantz, was born in Schuylkill County, PA and died at his home in Audobon, on November 22, 1934. While of advanced age and not physically rugged, he seemed as usual, making several trips uptown daily, until about 10 days before his death, when he became ill. While at times, he seemed improved, his condition took a change for the worse about noon on the day of his death, and in a short time he passed away. For a number of years he had been a sufferer of from heart and kidney trouble, and these, with recent complications, caused his death. He was a descendent of the rugged pioneer stock of this country. His ancestors came to America from Switzerland about 1750, and settled in eastern Pennsylvania, a district populated largely by Pennsylvania Dutch. In 1856 he came, with his parents, to Keokuk County, Iowa, and from there moved to Iowa County in 1860. There he grew to manhood and was married to Harriet Eddy. This union last until broken by the death of Mrs. Mantz on March 21, 1929. To this union were born eight children, all of whom are living. There are also 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, two brothers, Ed of West Bend and N.H. of Spirit Lake, and one sister, Alice Leach of Omaha. On October 3, 1882, Mr. Mantz came to Audobon County with his family and lived on a farm about two miles northwest of Audobon until the spring of 1903, when he closed his farming operations, and moved to Audobon, at which place he resided since that time. Even after leaving the farm he retained his active interest in all matters connected with the farm. Several of his children live here. The children are Everett, Audobon; Frank, Strawberry Point; Hal J., Audobon; William D., Audobon; Mrs Frank (Clara) Taylor, Hobart, Oklahoma; Theodore F., Des Moines; Mrs. George Schmidt, Audobon; and Albert, Belle Plaine, Canada. For many years the family home here has been a happy meeting place for the family. Hardly a day passed but some of them visited there. These were bright and happy occasions for the deceased; he eagerly looked forward to these visits. His was a kindly, genial disposition, and the loved the company of the members of his family. When a child, he was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He gave scant heed or concern to the creeds or dogmas. His philosophy of life and living can best be expressed in terms of the Golden Rule. His life was the embodiment of honor, honest and fair dealing, coupled with his unbounded faith in his fellow man. Thus, after living through a long and eventful period, we witness his departure, a life with its cycle complete. The funeral was held Saturday, November 24, at the family home, the Rev. Paul E. Parker, officiating. Gay S. Thomas, at the family's request, sang the same songs which were used at the funeral of Mrs.Samuel Mantz in March, 1929. Pall bearers were five sons and one son-in-law of the deceased. Burial was in Arlington Heights Cemetery. Out of town relatives attending were Alice Leach, Tim Leach and Jesse Gronstal, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. N. N. Mantz and Mr. and Mrs. William Stone, West Bend; Mrs. Marie Harr and daughter, Shirley, Lincoln, Nebraska. All the children except the daughter living in Oklahoma were present. | Mantz, Samuel (I76264)
