1854 | [EFA4.FTW] History of Buchanan County Andrew J. Eddy became a settler here in June, 1851, and built a log cabin near Richardson's. He was born in New York June 29, 1826, and when quite a young man emigrated to the State of Illinois, and thence to Iowa. His sister and mother came with him. The year he came he broke prairie with six yoke of oxen, and still owns the land he broke in June, 1850, and which he now, with true, manly pride, points out to the visitor. That year he raised a little sod corn. When he came to the township there were but three settlers there-a brother of Richardson, Silas K. Messenger, and W. Jewell. None of them are now residents. He has had four children, three of whom are now living, two daughters and one son, who are still at home: J. P. Eddy, Orra M., and Hattie A. In the early days Eddy's house was the home for the stranger whom night had overtaken out on the wild prairie | Eddy, Andrew Jackson (I60711)

1856 | [EFA4.FTW] Howard Lake-Waverly Herald, March 12, 2001 Last of Eddy triplets passes away By Lynda Jensen The last chapter of an era closed when Ida (Eddy) Gilmer, 93, the last of the Eddy triplets, died March 5. Gilmer was born to Ida and William Eddy on a farm south of Howard Lake in 1907. She was the only girl of the triplets, with two brothers, Howard and William. The triplets became something of Howard Lake celebrities in the early part of the last century, attracting visitors from all over, since it was a rarity at that time to have triplets that survived. The Eddy family included several other children, as well as twins. The Eddy triplets appeared in advertisements to promote the Howard Lake and Victor Nurseries as early as 1909 in the Howard Lake Herald. The nursery was owned by the Eddy family. One of the promotional pictures used for advertising is shown above. When the triplet brothers served in World War II, it was also covered in the Herald. Soon after the triplets were born, the Eddy family moved into a larger house in Howard Lake. Gilmer graduated from the Howard Lake High School. After graduation, she worked for her father for seven years at the nursery. She married Wes Gilmer in 1932, and farmed with him between Howard Lake and Cokato. Eventually, the couple built a new house in the city of Dassel. In her latter years, Gilmer was known for her kindness and strong spirit. She would give pieces of butter toffee to children every Sunday at the Dassel Church of Christ, where she was a member. | Eddy, William Henry (I23310)

1859 | [EFA4.FTW] http: /searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/oh+index+4941291038502+F David EDDY, born in New Jersey, came to OH while yet a single man, in the year 1804 or 1805. He made a location in Euclid, Cuyahoga county, and erected a log cabin there. The following year his father and mother, with a son named Timothy, came on and took up their abode in the primitive habitation already prepared by David. Caleb EDDY, the father, spent the remainder of his days here, but David soon pushed on further west , and joined the infant colony in Columbia. He "stuck his stakes" on lot forty, and built his log house on the bank of Rocky river. In the early winter of 1814 he married Elizabeth SHIRDLINE, of Washington county, Penn., and about two years subsequently began pioneer life in the little cabin previously mentioned. EDDY was a member of the militia, and was an occupant of the block house. His life was one of many hardships and of arduous toil. He died, on the farm on which he first located, October 21, 1853, and his widow about a year afterward, October 6, 1854. There children were four in number, two boys and two girls, viz : Jesse, Enos, Susannah and Eunice. Jesse married Caroline CHAMBERLAIN, of Rochester, Lorain county. He, Jesse, is now living there. His wife died February 5th, 1855, leaving two children, Mary E. (Mrs. MYERS) and Hattie E. (Mrs. MANN). Enos married Cynthia BRADFORD, now deceased. Susannah married Myron BRADFORD, and both are dead. Eunice married, first, Hiram BRADFORD, and afterwards Samuel HANLEY, with whom she is now living in the township of Rochester. | Eddy, David (I03112)

Summary: James A. Eddy was born in 1819 in Providence's west-side, the son of Barnard Eddy who was a house carpenter by trade. James likely learned basic wood working skills from his father and may or may not have shown an interest or proficiency in the carpentry trade. It's possible he found either hard physical work or working with his father not to his liking, as at 19 yrs of age he began work as a clerk in Joseph Belcher's Hardware at 11 Broad Street. The following year he married a Sarah W. Hathaway from MA. On April 1, 1941 James entered into a co-partnership with Isaac S. Battey, who was two years older and also born in the same working class west-side neighborhood. They both were members of the small Pine Street 2nd Baptist church and were probably longtime friends. This new business was known as Battey & Eddy, Hardware Merchants & Plane Manuf. located at 5 Broad Street. The co-partnership notice states that they have "taken the store #5 Broad Street, Providence, RI, where they intend keeping a general assortment of Hardware, Planes, and Joiner's Tools". In a classic case where good friends don't often prove good business partners, by the following directory in 1843, James Eddy had taken over the Hardware business at 5 Broad and Isaac had moved on. The hardware business run by James A. Eddy at 5 Broad also failed shortly thereafter. One look at the time line above would seem to indicate someone who attempted several occupations, but failed to stick to anything for very long. In the end he fell back on what he may have learned first, that being carpentry, which he practiced for the last 20 years of his lif To date, there is to our knowledge only one plane known with the Battey and Eddy stamp, that being the example posted on this site.[see Battey & Eddy] We have seen at least seven examples of planes stamped James A. Eddy, and while we suspect there are more, it still appears to be a relatively scarce mark. Both would seem to support the very short existence of both Battey & Eddy, Hardware, 5 Broad and James A. Eddy, Hardware, 5 Broad. There is good reason to suspect that it was Isaac Battey that made the planes and James A. Eddy that worked the counter at 5 Broad. Although James A.Eddy continued to advertise himself as a hardware merchant and plane manuf., after taking over the business at 5 Broad, Eddy never describes himself as toolmaker or planemaker at any point that we have found to date, other than the hardware advertisement. Examining details on the single Battey & Eddy plane, seven James A. Eddy planes, and numerous Isaac S. Battey planes have shown enough similarities to suggest that Isaac Battey may have made all the planes involved. | Eddy, James Anthony (I08475)
