I recall one time when we were visiting Grandma Rachael and Grandpa Earl, I was playing with a neighborhood kid. Later my mother implied that it was Bud's daughter. Dad said that his father, Earl, was sending support to several women who had children by Bud."

Betty Howe writes:

S. Edward (Ed) was the "most loved" of all the children. He was the President of the S. Edward Eaton Electrical Engineers, NYC. The company installed some of the first electrical wirings in NY. He sold out in 1929, went to Florida, and from there into the rural South (NC). His wife, Olive Bowers Eddy Eaton, a graduate of Brown University in 1905, taught school in the South (Franklin, NC) and Edw started an automobile agency (Chevrolet).

Edward did keep the S. Edward Eaton company all the time that his children were growing up. They lived in Nyack. Wm and Edw divided Unterberg and both families lived there for a period.

It was in his later life, after Edw left for NC that Julian employed both Wm and Edw in the citrus growing and marketing groves that he owned in Coconut Grove, Florida, "

AMary:

Gram married at home in Riverside, RI.

The crash of '29 - Ed became sick and went into a sanatoriam. Left electrical contactor job in NYC. Went from Nyack to Ashville, NC and started a Chevrolet car agency. Never got $ from contractor . In 6/37 Ed went to Coconot Grove to work for Julian in the fruit groves and then in the office.

Gram taught school in Frandlin, NC in 1934 til Christmas of 38 and then they moved to Coconut Grove to be with Ed.

committed suicide because of stuttering, which he couldn't overcome. AMary says: killed himself with gas because of stuttering - Brown President very upset - so brilliant - and "gorgeous" a person committing suicide.

President of Brown, where Guyton was studying, said that Guyton was "brilliant".

Pat Files Smart - 3/13/02 "I remember Grandma Rachael talking about Guyton's suicide--she adored him and felt that he had been misunderstood--when she talked about Guyton, she had the same look in her eye when she talked about Uncle Dick (Richard Chace Ashley), whom she also adored."

3/19/03
Rachael Ashley Audley sent me the Chace/Chase genealogy:

"
Notes for GUYTON EDDY:
Guyton was supposedly very brilliant and very well respected at Brown.
Grandma Rachael adored Guyton and felt that he had been misunderstood.
"When she talked about Guyton, she had the same look in her eye when she
talked about Uncle Dick, whom she also adored." Guyton committed suicide
due to his horrible stuttering (he was teased) and caused him to see no
other alternative. "

Debbie Eaton Keeney has Dorothy's diary/journal from 1916-1918, when she doesn't appear to have held the job of librarian. When Mary B. Eaton visited her in 1937-38, Dorothy had been a librarian for some time.

Mary Eaton says that she did not lead a happy life. She became pregnant and Uncle Earl helped her get an abortion. In the end, she took a room at the Crown Hotel Providence after she thought she might lose her job. She tripped or purposely fell from the 2nd to the first floor, noone is sure which.

3/13/02 - Rachael Ashley Audley said " I remember hearing about Dorothy's suicide -- jumped from top floor to courtyard below in a hotel."

Irene was Olive B and Ed's flower girl.

according to Mary B. Eaton on July 29, 2001, Irene married at age 80 and she is now in a nursing home.

A. Mary says that Irene was a private school teacher around Providence (she lived at home). After she retired, she went to Pinehurst, NC so that she could "retire playing golf" as Irene put it. She may have lived in the countryclub, since A.Mary has her address as "country club, Pinehurst, NC." Shortly after she went to Pinehurst she heard that Mrs. Bliss died, and in answer Mr. Bliss went to Pinehurst to see her and they became reacquainted, and eventually he proposed.

She used to own a place at Matunuck beach in RI, that her brother, Philip, the architect built for her. 737 Matunuck Beach Rd., Wakefield, RI - house that Irene gave to her husband's son, xxx Bliss.

Irene is/was in nursing home in Providence.

maiden daughters, Jean and Emma, lived at/maintained Populars in Somerset, RI.

Saving Ancesters: p 42.

"Except for their school years in Providence, Emma's long visits to Colorado, and Jean's years at Emerson School in Boston and as a teacher in Washington, they spent their lives at The Poplars. Both aunts were expert cooks and housekeepers, hospitable, affectionate, with high principles, good judgment, and a sense of humor.

Jean took piano lessons and played fairly well.

Both Jean and Emma were full of family lore. Emma especially had a good memory for family history.

saving ancesters p.48

as told by Emma to author:

"Jennie", when she was a little girlt, used to play Sunday School all by herself. One day her mother and sister Mary heard her praying: ""O Lord, bless those we know. O Lord, bless those we don't know. O Lord, we know 'most everybody. " Just then her little round comb fell out and she said, "O Lord, excuse me while I put back my comb".

notes from Mary B. Eaton - Aug, 2001

Harriet died in the late 30's, early 40's. She was retarded - and at the end, lived with a woman who took care of her.

3/13/02 - Rachael Ashley Audley:

"Dad (Dick) had always told us Aunt Harriet had Down Syndrome. The day before he died, he gave some of his blood to the University of Virginia to see if he was carrying the gene that would give all of his children a greater chance of having kids with Downs. It was a very expensive test at the time and when the University found out that Mom and Dad died the next day, they did not charge any of us for the blood test. He was not carrying the gene, which meant none of us had to be tested."

Whitney Ashley Vose said: "I had alwyas heard that Harriet had Downs Syndrome and was sent away from home when she was around 8 years fo age. I think she died in her mid to late thirties."

Pat Files Smart said: "Bud Ashley was a very sensitive person who apparently took wonderful care of Harriet, who was their Trisomy 21 child and who lived to the unheard of age of 40 something!"

Notes from Mary B. Eaton on Aunt Rae:

Earl may have been a cousin - not sure how related, but at the time, that relationship was attributed to Harriet's mongoloidism.

Aunt Rae did so much for Mary B

When Mary came to Providence to go to school at Katy Gibbs, Rachel had Mary for dinner
