1307 | VERMILLION - S. E. QUARTER. by BENJ. SUMMERS, ESQ. Deacon John Beardsley erected the first log house back from the Lake shore in Vermillion, on lot no. 12, 2d section, in the year 1815. He settled first in 1810, near the mouth of Vermillion River, but the unhealthiness of the location and con- sequent sickness of his family, induced him to move hack to the less fertile but more healthful ridges. Here his family soon re- gained health. He was a good and useful man. Though eccentric in some of his views, and probably in error, especially in his theory of preserving his family from the contamination of the world by educating them at home instead of at school - he was liberal to a fault, very negligent of his dress; of a tall and robust frame, fully do- voted to his Christian duties. He first in- troduced religious meetings into the differ- ent neighborhoods round about by holding reading meetings, which ho conducted by singing, prayers, reading a sermon, &C and which in the absence of regular clergy was very beneficial in keeping up the forms, and, to some extent, the spirit of religion, and steadying the Ark of the Lord in the wilderness. The writer hereof distinctly remembers the impressions of the first religious services he attended in the wilderness. It was in the Fall of 1817, at the dwelling of Joel Crane, Esq., near the township line. Deacon B. officiated. His dress was remarka- ble to a person just from the refinements of New England. Woolen shirt, flannel wamus, tied by strings, and unmentiona- bles of same material, without fulling or dressing, and domestically colored with butternut bark, composed the main fea- tures of his wardrobe; and in the sum- mer following, shoes and stockings were generally dispensed with. A few years of back woods experience brought the most of us into uniform with our worthy deacon. The Deacon was a pillar of the first Con- gregational Church organized in his neigh- borhood, and was also an almost indispen- sible accompaniment of a log or frame rais- ing. Cheerful and happy himself, he dif- fused the same spirit around. He raised a numerous family, most of whom died ere middle age, and now rest by his side in the grave yard donated by him to the public, in the southeast part of the township, called the "Ridge cemetery." He was elected the third Justice of the Peace of the Township, but by some mis- take never was commissioned. His chil- dren were Philo, Joseph Smith, (who died in 1822) Ann, Clement, Sophia, Joseph Smith 2d, Harriet, Seth - who died in 1848 - Maria, (in 1844,) John and Irene. Ann married Capt. Elliot, and died in 1844, Sophia married Allen Eddy, and died in 1849, Harriet married Mr. Blasdel, and died in 1842, John married Leah Corkins, and died in 1849. All who married left issue. Philo removed west about 1830. Irene, wife of D. L. Washburn, Esq., and Clement, who married Sarah Akers, have numerous offspring, and still reside in Vermillion, and are the only known sur- vivors of the children. Clement is now - 1858 - Commissioner of the county of Erie. The deacon died of lockjaw in the year 1831, perfectly resigned and composed, in full assurance of a blissful immortality, and exemplified beautifully that "The chamber where the good man meets his fate, Is privileged beyond the common walks of life - Quite on the verge of heaven." His aged widow still survives him. | Beardsley, John (I85548)

1312 | W.H. Eddy, Leader, Dies; Private Rites Private funeral services were held today for William Henry (Bill) Eddy, Sr., a Burlingame civic leaders whose public efforts ranged from active leadership of the San Mateo county Republican party to service as a member of the Burlingame Elementary and the San Mateo Union High school district boards of trustees. A resident of 1137 Drake avenue in Burlingame for 50 years, Eddy died at the age of 76 at Sequoia hospital in Redwood City on Saturday, following a long illness. He was an executive at the old Crocker National Bank headquarters in San Francisco, retiring after a career of 32 years about 1935, when his health began to fail. Five years ago he entered a rest home in Palo Alto. In the 1920s and 30s, Eddy known to many affectionately as "Bill" Eddy, participated in many civic endeavors for the welfare and progress of his community, and county. During the Al Smith- Herbert Hoover campaign, Eddy joined forces with William H. Crocker to promote Hoover's candidacy throughout the area. About 25 years ago he also served on the Burlingame Elementary and the San Mateo Union High school boards of trustees. His varied interests were directed to Masonic work, and he was a past master of Burlingame lodge 400, F.& A.M. He promoted the YMCA, was the advisor to Job's Daughters, and also aided the development of the Boy Scout organization in the county. Eddy was a friend of The Times' late Publisher, Horace W. Amphlett, joining him in numerous community development projects. Friends today recalled, "Bill Eddy gave of himself to so many. He was dedicated to the welfare and progress of San Mateo county and the community of Burlingame. A native of San Francisco, he was the husband of the late Henrietta Eddy and father of the late William H. Eddy Jr. of Menlo Park. The latter died two years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cecile Nelsen of Burlingame, who is associated with the engineering firm of Wilsey & Ham, and Mrs. Marian Biddell of San Mateo, and four grandchildren. Services were conducted from Crosby - N. Gay chapel in Burlingame. Interment was private. The Excelsior was wrecked and later two other vessels under his command. His voyages took him to many ports, in Europe and the Orient. 1342 | WILLIAM EDDY 29 Apr 1908 May 1981 26170 (Saint Marys, Pleasants, WV) (none specified) 276-10-6394 Ohio Hello, I have spoken with my father just a couple of hours ago and got some information about more Eddy's. The information is as follows: 1. My great grandfather, William Eddy married Francis Kahn. No dates known at this point. 2. William and Francis had three children: Anna Belle Eddy, George Eddy and Junior Ervin Eddy b. July 6, about 1933. Death date unknown. 3. Anna Belle and George Eddy, I am currently researching more information about them. 4. Junior Eddy, married his first wife, Mary Anthony (currently Mary Hammonds). They had three children together: John Erwin Eddy b. Feb 26,1955, Norma Jean Eddy b. Aug. 10, 1956, and Marcela Francis Eddy b. July 19, 1957. I hope this information helps. My father has told me many stories about his part of the Eddy family. He said his great grandparents came from West Virginia and then migrated to Ohio. Dates of those moves are unknown. If there is anything I can do as for research on the Eddy name, please assign it to me. I am very interested and willing to do as much as I can. So far I am doing a family tree and have five generations. I keep going to your website and many others, finding alot of information. However, I have not been able to put down as much information as I could until I find out dates on my great grand parents. Thank you, | Eddy, William (I83705)

1348 | WILLIAM LEONARD EDDY. William Leonard Eddy is the proprietor of the Crystal Jar Dairy and Maplewood stock farm on section 15, Crawford township, Crawford county, and his business has become an important and profitable one, owing to capable management and untiring industry on the part of the owner. Mr. Eddy is a native son of New England, his birth having occurred in Leicester, MA, on the 1st of June, 1845. His parents were Leonard and Isabella (Newton) Eddy, also natives of MA. During his active business career the father followed the occupation of farming, but during the later years of his life lived retired, enjoying a richly merited rest. He died in 1893 at the age of eighty-four years, and his wife passed away in 1886 at the age of fifty-seven years. William Leonard Eddy, having mastered the branches of learning taught in the common schools, continued his education in Worcester Academy at Worcester, MA. He was but eighteen years of age when in response to his country's call for troops he enlisted in February, 1864, as a member of Company K, Twenty-fifth MA Infantry. He was twice wounded during his service and was often in the thickest of the fight. He participated in the battles of Cold Harbor, Petersburg and ten other engagements, and never faltered in his performance of duty, faithfully following the old flag into the thickest of an engagement, upon the long marches or to the lonely picket line. He received an honorable discharge at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in September, 1865, and returned home with a creditable military record. On account of the injuries which he had sustained in battle, however, he was unable to enter into active business for some time thereafter. The year 1867 witnessed his arrival in Crawford county, Kansas, and he became a factor in the development of the great and growing west as a merchant in Crawfordsville, entering into partnership relations with Colonel Percy Daniels. After a short time, however, he withdrew from the store and turned his attention to farming and stock-raising. Since 1888 he has given his entire time to the dairy business, and the Crystal Jar Dairy has become famed throughout this part of the state. He has a valuable farm of one hundred and sixty acres pleasantly located a mile and a half west of Girard. The place is well equipped with modern improvements and accessories. He has a fine residence, and there is also a most commodious and substantial cattle barn, forty by sixty feet, which was completed in the year 1903, and affords abundant shelter to the large herd of cows which he keeps upon his place for dairy purposes. Neatness and thrift characterize the farm, and the products of the dairy being of an excellent quality find a ready sale on the market. His patronage is now extensive and returns to him a good annual income. On the 27th of November, 1873, occurred the marriage of Mr. Eddy and Miss Ella M. Bayless, a daughter of Jonathan and Eugene (Briggs) Bayless, natives of New York and Michigan, respectively. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Eddy has been blessed with four children: Frank B., at home; Leonard J., who is now in Kansas City, Missouri; and Lucy Isabella and Henry Newton, who are still with their parents. Mr. Eddy and his family are members of the Methodist church at Girard and are well known people of the community, the hospitality of the best homes of the neighborhood being extended cordially to them. Mr. Eddy belongs to the Ancient Order of United Workmen at Girard and he maintains pleasant relations with his old army comrades through his membership in General Bailey Post No. 49, G. A. R. In politics his allegiance is given to the Republican party, and he keeps well informed on the questions and issues of the day, but while he always votes in support of the measures which he believes will contribute most to the general progress of town, county or state he has never sought or desired office for himself, preferring to give his attention to his business interests, in which he is meeting with very desirable success.
