At that time Adam Nelson was granted 196 acres on the east corner of the base line and Hilton road . On November 18 1896 Peter Lampman sold it to his daughter Elisa Jane , Mrs. Arkin Eddy , for $1,000.00 . It was registered on November 09, 1898 . The eddies came from Oxford center Woodstock . Leonard married Winnie bishop , daughter of Harry and Barbara bishop and lived on the Hilton road where Dora Mrs. Earle Headley , Margaret Mrs. Donald McDonald , jean Mrs. Reg furkey, and Helen Mrs. Bob harten were born . After moving to the "I." line , Cedric and Ernest were born . Helen Harten, are Kings granddaughter remembers her great grandfather Peter Lampman . He liked to hunt birds and always gave them a fighting chance . Shooting them only after they flew. In Ralph Nelson's memoirs he remembers Arkin Eddy as a kind man and an industrious Farmer . Ralph lived with his parents George and Margaret Nelson on that base line across from bob Burton's . The nelsons came to the island from a Cornwall in 1892 when Ralph was two years old . Ralph went through the Eddy farm on his way to and from school in Hilton beach . Ralph said "Arkin Eddy built one of the finest homes on the island " . It was a solid stone house built by Mr. McIntyre and Mr. John Hamilton with the stone work done by ben garside. Other buildings were a very large Hi barn on a stone foundation , a milk house with 2ft. thick walls and driving sheds . The milk house and driving shed still stands in good condition . The eddies capped 25 milk cows and young stock , seven horses , 40 sheep and raised the feed for all the livestock . The eddies had a good market for their produce . Steamboats traveled the north channel and Arkin Eddy supplied the boats with dry stove wood , ice from his ice house on the shore , milk , cream , fresh meat mostly feel and lamb , fresh vegetables , Maple Syrup and apples . Besides being an expert Farmer Arkin had a workshop where he made his own sleighsand wagons.he was a good neighbor . He sent his son Ernest to sow a field of a oats for the nelsons when they had no seed.another time a young man had killed a deer out of season and was taken to the soo by the game warden . He could not pay his fine so they put him in jail . Arkin went to the soo , paid the fine and brought him home . 1891 Hilton Township, St. Joseph Island, Algoma District Census 1891 ALGOMA DISTRICT #46, Sub. 1238 | Stephanie: As I was reviewing the entry of my mother on-line, I noticed several errors. Specifically the errors are (1) my mother's name is spelled Edyth and not Edith, (2) my brother's name is spelled Quentin and not Quinton, and (3) my birthdate is 20 Dec 1931 not 1932. Additionally, I have included the information of all the rest of my brothers and sister so that you can include the complete family data in future revisions of book supplements and on-line. If you need additional information or clarification of specific data, please let me know. Best regards, Ward Clemence White 698 Azure Hills Drive Simi Valley, CA (805) 526-9355 5788.
