    Succumbs to Pleuro-Pneumonia in West Brattleboro Home
    Covered Route Since it Started in 1900

    Alner Perez Eddy, 62, only carrier on rural mail route No. 2 since the route was started Aug. 15, 1900, died at his home on South street in West Brattleboro at 9:10 Saturday night of pleuro-pneumonia. He had been ill since Feb.5, when he made his last trip.

    Mr. Eddy was the second of five children of Albert Eddy and Chloe Ann (Rice) Eddy and was born in Wardsboro Aug. 11, 1860. He attended the public schools of his native town, Stratton and Manchester, after which he attended Glenwood seminary. For a time he operated a milk route in West Brattleboro and then attended and graduated from Albany Business College, after which he was in business in New York city about 12 years. He returned from New York to Brattleboro in 1900 when he became mail carrier on rural delivery route No. 2 which starts from the West Brattleboro postal station, covering Guilford street the Ames Hill road and the Sunset Lake road and taking in part of the town of Guilford.

    He was a member of the West Brattleboro Baptist church and was first trustee and a deacon of the church. He also was a member of Wantastiquet lodge of Odd Fellows.

    He was a man of exemplary character, honest and upright in all his dealings, a devoted husband and father, conscientious in his work and interested in all that was for the best of his town or community.

    Besides his wife, who was Miss Minnie Laughton of Dummerston and whom he married in Shelburne Falls, Mass., Oct. 12, 1904, he leaves two children, Robert L. Eddy and Anna W. Eddy, both juniors in the Brattleboro high school; also three brothers and a sister, Elmer A. Eddy of Stratton, Mrs. Lura A. Benson of Brattleboro, Rev. Bert H. Eddy of Vergennes, and Emery J. Eddy of Brattleboro.

    Private services will be held at the home at 12:30 tomorrow and the funeral will be held at 2 o?clock in the West Brattleboro Baptist church. Rev. C. Walter Bishop, pastor of the church will officiate. Friends are requested not to send flowers.

    Widow of West Brattleboro Rural Mail Carrier had Heart Attack
    Substitute Carrier 12 Years

    Mrs. Minnie (Laughton) Eddy, 67, widow of Alner P. Eddy, died suddenly of a heart attack at her home on South Street in West Brattleboro last evening at 9:30 o'clock.

    She was born in Dummerston Dec. 30, 1867, the eldest of the four children of the late Austin and Fausta (Wheeler) Laughton. Before her marriage she was a successful school teacher, also was superintendent of schools in Dummerston a number of years.

    On Oct. 12, 1904 she married Alner P. Eddy of West Brattleboro, rural mail carrier. She acted as substitute carrier about 12 years.

    On Dec. 16, 1932, she suffered a slight shock from which she recovered sufficiently so that for the past year she has cared for the home. She was an active member of the Baptist church and Ladies' Aid society, also had a class of young women in Sunday school.

    She leaves two children, Robert L. who lives at home and carries on the place, and Anna W. a successful school teacher; also two brothers, Arthur W. and Ransom B. Laughton, and one sister Alice G. Laughton, of Dummerston.

    Funeral services will be held at the West Brattleboro Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2:30, daylight saving time.

    Stratton, Windham County, Vermont

    This cemetery is located northwest of the intersection of the Stratton-Arlington Rd. and Willis Cemetery Rd, beyond the house that occupies that corner. It was a family plot originally situated upon the farm of Phineas Ward Eddy. The stones face east as expected (away from the road). To its west there once existed a millpond that had spread out over the lowland there. It is surrounded by a stone wall with a gate on the road side. This cemetery's first burial was in 1836 and it was last used in 1911.
